New York--
News out of New York this morning has GM David Thompson sending out backup center Eddie Lee Wilkins, Reggie Williams, and a plethora of draft picks to the Washington Bullets for Small Forward John Williams and backup center Melvin Turpin.
This trade took place very quickly following the first preseason simulation seeing both the Knicks and Bullets both fair pretty poorly, with New York winning 2 of 6 and Washington winning 4 of 9.
One of the big problems the Knicks seemed to have other then the loss of Patrick for a couple games, was the glaring whole at the Small Forward position. After lossing Kenny Walker to the Vancouver Grizzlies during the expansion draft, New York was left with Reggie Williams and William Nielsen to try and carry the load. Neither player played very well and forced the hand of the New York general manager to fire off a trade.
Williams and Nielsen combined for about 7 PPG and 6 RPG, where as replacement John Williams in a much bigger role in Washington had career high numbers of 20 PPG and 6 RPG. The Knickerbockers were very high on the scorer and moved quickly shipping off their first round pick this season as well as the players to land the 23 year old Williams.
Williams had this to say about the trade, "I really enjoyed my time in Washington, but I have a chance to play alongside of some great young talent in New York for at the very least a few good seasons. I will bring my A game every night to try to make this team more successful then they thought they could be."
This trade did end the stay of very well liked Eddie Lee Wilkins. Eddie played well in his backup role, but was not able to be reached for comment at this time.
The addition of Williams shifts the heavy scoring load off of Patrick Ewing and will help to spread it amongst him, and Gerald Wilkens and help raise the Knicks meager 84 PPG average.
