Raptors Sign Marquis Daniels[/b]
6 year contract worth 93 million TSN reports[/i]
Toronto AP- Players like Ray Allen, Jerry Stackhouse, Steve Nash, Carlos Boozer, Marquis Daniels and Jay Williams headed another strong free agent class this summer and it was pretty surprising seeing some jumping teams and others resigning with their respective teams. The Toronto Raptors mainly targetted Ray Allen but as he signed with the Sacramento Kings for a very lucrative contract, they quickly signed their fallback option in 24 year old Marquis Daniels who played for the Sacramento Kings coincidently. Daniels was signed to a 6 year contract worth around 93 million and will join a lineup that features Devin Harris, Dwyane Wade, Zach Randolph and DeSagana Diop. "Im very excited to join such a young team thats on a rise of making a big run, I wanted to resign with the Kings but it seemed like they were focused on signing Ray Allen that they didn't really make a valient effort to bring me back". said the newest Raptor Marquis Daniels. The Raptors drafted G/F J.R Smith in this past draft and was the projected starter but General Manager Ed Rodriguez figured he needed someone more experienced and ready to take the job now, that being Daniels who people forget is only 24 years old.
Smith will bolster the bench as Daniels takes his spot[/i]
Daniels averaged 18.3 ppg in 34.7 mpg and also picked up 5.0 rpg and 1.5 spg, He is also known to be a very good defender, especially locking down big scorers which is going to be key for the Raptors success this season. "We feel like now our team is ready to hangout with the big boys and make a run this season. " said Raptors General Manager Rodriguez. The Raptors are rumored to be active on the trade front and are evaluating all possible options to improve significantly the bench as training camp nears.
Marquis Daniels was drafted 18th overall by the Sacramento Kings three years ago and became a huge surprise when he rised as the teams leader and one of the top scorers. Kings GM even made an offer to the Raptors at this years trading deadline which involved a swap between Marquis Daniels and Dwyane Wade. Raptors GM Ed Rodriguez obviously rejected it and commented that Wade will not go for just one player and that he will most likely stay since the offers haven't been interesting at all. Who wouldve thought that in the offseason, the Raptors would snatch away Daniels from the Kings without giving up anything.
