Year in Review
Denver, CO --(AP)
With another season of ABCA basketball coming to a close, the Denver Nuggets clinched the 8th and final playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference. Finishing with the 8th worst record last season, the Nuggets were lotto bound once again. But with off-season additions Chris Paul and Eddie Griffin coming aboard, team morale was boosted and even considered the idea of making the playoffs. "It was definitely a positive season. Although we lost in the 1st round, making the playoffs is something we can, and will build on for next season. We had some key guys come in, and play some major roles. Chris (Paul) and Eddie (Griffin) played very solid in their rookie seasons. But to say the least, the addition of Vince (Carter) definitely improved our confidence about making the playoffs." commented GM dasm0kesh0w2474.
Vince Carter has averaged 27.4 PPG during his 9 year career.
And although the Nuggets made some significant additions in the off-season, the addition of Vince Carter from the Celtics definitely sparked the Denver offense. Denver acquired Carter from Boston in exchange for PG Gilbert Arenas and a 2006 1st round pick. And after acquiring VC, Denver went 15-5 down the final stretch to edge out the Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. "The addition of Vince (Carter) to our lineup was definitely the change this team needed. He can change the game with his scoring ability, and allowed us to diversify our offense schemes. He really brought us together as a team, and played a very key role in his short stay here. We're definitely looking forward to next season, and improving even more." commented GM dasm0kesh0w2474.
Most Valuable Player
PG Chris Paul
Selected 2nd overall by Denver in the past ABCA draft, the former Wake Forest product had a very successful rookie campaign, netting 21.6 PPG, 7.5 APG and 2.2 SPG. He led the team in scoring for the majority of the season untill the arrival of Vince Carter. He ranked in the top 10 in steals, and was one of only 2 ABCA PGs to score more than 20 points a game, Baron Davis being the other. And at the ripe age of 20, Chris Paul made the transition to the pro level with relative ease.
Biggest Surprise
PF Eddie Griffin
Acquired from the Utah Jazz in exchange for Chris Duhon, Eddie Griffin made his presence known immediately in Denver. Averaging close to 10 rebounds per game, and over 3 blocks a game, Griffin was a good contributor in the paint. Although he wasn't exactly a dominant force in the post, he showed that he can be a very solid defender in the ABCA.
