Salt Lake Tribune:
In continued efforts to rebuild the franchise, the Utah Jazz announced that they have traded power forward Elton Brand to the Memphis Grizzlies for 3 players and a first round draft pick. Brand came to the Jazz last season in the blockbuster that brought Kevin Garnett to the Raptors. In that trade the Jazz acquired Brand and 2 future first round picks. One pick brought them point guard Aaron Brooks who had a great training camp, showing he could shoot and handle the ball.
Let's look at the 3 players the Jazz acquired for Elton Brand:
Al Harrington: 4 years 56 million left on current deal. Al was a viable second option for the Grizzlies this past season but was made expendable when the Grizzlies drafted Julian Wright early in the draft. This year Harrington is set to make 12 million which makes him another piece that can be traded off as the Jazz look to keep rebuilding. Harrington is a career 13 points 7 rebounds a game player who may not play more than a handful of games in the Jazz colors.
Josh Howard: 2 years 9 million left on his current contract. Josh has underachieved since coming into the league but looks to improve that in Utah. Howard is known for his defense which is the most valued trait in the ABCA. He's a career 12 ppg scorer who can lockdown any small forward in the league. His contract makes him appealing to many teams.
Jarrett Jack: 1 year 2 million left on his contract. Jack was a backup point guard for the Grizzlies last season and will play that role this year also. He's a decent defender with good passing skills but may never be the true point he was thought to be. Depending on how Brooks develops they may decide to keep Jack around or just let him go at season's end. The draft will have a lot to do with that.
The acquiring of the pick now gives the Jazz 3 selections in the first round of next years draft. They have the Nuggets, Blazers and the Grizzlies. All teams look to do well this season and those picks have large question marks above them.
With all trades, this one boils down to how well Brand does in Memphis and how much more the Jazz can acquire for their players.
