(Washington Post)- With the draft being a couple of days away, the Washington Wizards organization has announced the hiring of a new GM in hopes to find a long-term solution to manage the struggling squad. The team, which holds the 6th overall selection in the upcoming draft, hired former Milwaukee Bucks general manager, ilovebball. After being interviewed by both Washington and New York, ilovebball choose the Wizards organization over the powerhouse Knicks.
Ilovebball told the Washington Post, "I am excited to join this Wizards organization. The situation reminds to me to one similar to Milwaukee before I took that job. A young team with some pieces, some cap, but lacking the pieces to make a playoff run." Ilovebball accomplished quite a bit as the Bucks GM taking them to the postseason his second year managing the squad. Ilovebball made the postseason every year with the Bucks except for his first season. While he was active for a large part of his tenure with the Bucks, ilovebball later faced some computer problems, and went inactive. He was fired before the 2007 draft.
Ilovebball went on to tell the Washington Post, "I see a good project here in Washington. A team with some pieces I can work with, to help make a playoff team, and hopefully, someday, a legitimate contender." He went onto say, "I can be an active GM. I was active in Milwaukee for a few seasons, before hitting some computer problems. Everything is fixed, and I am ready to get back into the league."
Wizards owner Abe Pollin told the Post, "we are hoping that this GM can be the one who stays, and who helps bring this team back to the postseason, and to greatness." Pollin went onto say, "whichever direction he takes our team in, I feel that it will be the right one. Judging by his past success in this league and others, he is a GM who knows what he is doing. And he is very humble too."
The Wizards are expected to make many moves within the next couple of weeks or so.
