Nuggets Hire O’Connor as General Manager
For the past eight years Kevin O’Connor has been fielding offers from baseball general managers. About a month ago he made a comment that he’d also like to GM a basketball team. He got his wish. The 37 year old O’Connor* has a resume of four World Series rings. He built some of the best teams the Houston Astros ever had. Moving to basketball might become a challenge for him, but he has promised that he will bring the Nuggets back to the top.
(O'Connor is an avid guitar and bass player.)
This move may come across as surprising, but O’Connor has proven his flexibility. He inherited a Houston Astros team with little talent in the minor leagues, but through persuasive trades, free agency signings and draft picks, he built the team quickly.
Here are the highlights of his press conference-
Q: Tell us. Is basketball your first love?
A: As a kid I loved playing basketball. I used to enjoy watching or talking about baseball more, but you know, baseball, basketball or football, it doesn’t really matter to me. I love all three equally. As far as what I prefer doing; being GM of a baseball or basketball team? Well that’ll be my secret.
Q: Do you expect the switch to be a challenge?
A: It’s not really a switch, I’m still the General Manager of the Houston Astros. Anyways, life is a challenge. Why not embrace as many as possible to make the most of your life? Reach high. Yes, I think it’ll be a challenge. And I think I’ll be able to overcome this challenge. I know I can bring the Nuggets to top again. Losing Chris Paul was tough for this team, but this team has talent to compete and the pieces to get better.
Q: Kevin, what are your plans for this team?
A: Jeez. I don’t know. We’ll have to see what comes to us. Things change. We’ll have to see. If you really want answer, I’ll tell you this. I want the best players in the game. The players with the most heart. The players who want it, I mean, the players who want a championship. Some players who, even if they have won one, or two, or three, want more and more.
*I’m actually 16, but this makes a good story, haha.
