Is the ABCA draft a true science or just plain luck? The evidence would suggest a little bit of both. For the most part, the higher you are picked in the draft, the better your career will be. But for every Shaquille O’Neal or David Robinson, there is a Sam Bowie or Danny Ferry — both No. 2 overall picks who failed to live up to expectations.
The draft is dotted with players who came in with a heap of shining college credentials, only to spend a career in mediocrity and if they were lucky — like the Spurs’ Ferry — was a role player on a winning team.
Weather these players lacked the mental attributes or the want to, one things for certain they did not lack the talent. The old saying does go "You can't rely on talent alone", and how true that is today too.
The Clippers have found themselves wondering, if they've once again selected a bust or two.
Greg Oden the 7'0'' coming out of Ohio St. looked like the next best multi-talented Center since Hakeem. Now he's looking the biggest bust since Sam Bowie.
Oden was taken Second in the draft, and was looked to make an immediate impact. He did, he proved that if you make it past the front court of the Clipps your home free. In college he would re-direct a whole teams offensive strategy, talleying 6, 7, and 8 block per game.
Now lets take a look at what he's doing one year into the league.
Name Pos Games MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG TPG
Oden C 13 32.7 7.9 10.5 2.0 0.6 1.8 1.6
1.8 BPG, simply pathetic. The 7 footer is averaging as many blocks as the 6'6'' Michael Jordan did one year in his career. Lets not even get into scoring, 7.9PPG. What the heck is this Kid doing. Shaq has a better chance of making a free throw, then this guy does of finding the basket.
Although this is just pre-season, the numbers speak for themselves. Not to that he was mainly playing against back-ups, and still being out played by a 13th first round pick in Spencer Hawes.
One thing is for certain, that he is consistant. He has steadily been on the decline since he put on that Clippers Jersey.
However, the Clippers GM boomerpurser has stated, that he and the team still does believe in Oden. He just needs improvement on his work ethic and is in need of big man mentorship.
No matter what happens unless this guy does a complete 180, Clippers fans won't stand for it to much longer. They have already demanded trades.
Between Durant and Oden, and we haven't even got into Durant yet. The fans are going cra-zy

The disappointment called Durant next edition.
