Pacers ditch future, welcome Price:
Indiana –
Who needs the future anyway?
Not the Indiana Pacers, who, in a three-team trade earlier today, traded young PG Vern Flemming and three first round picks to the Orlando Magic and Portland Trailblazers to acquire guards Mark Price and Drazen Petrovic.
“I think Mark is a great addition,” star guard Reggie Miller commented Thursday. “I think it’s a better deal for our future than any draft picks would be.”
The Pacers, who are headed this year by GM Corey Vilhauer, are looking at a very promising season. Players and fans are optimistic about their chances in the crowded Eastern Conference.
“Ve vill do un great job in the basketball game,” starting center Rik Smits uttered in a press conference. “Ve love what player like Mark vill brink to team.”
The deal, finalized this morning, brought Price, Petrovic and the 1991 first round draft pick from the Blazers, while Orlando picked up youngster forward Cliff Robinson, also from the Blazers, Flemming and rarely used Mike Sanders from the Pacers. Portland gets three first round draft picks from the Pacers, guard John Lucas from the Magic.
Vilhauer was thrilled.
“Price is one of the last pieces that this team needs to be competitive in the future,” Vilhauer commented. “I have a master plan that will make the Pacers a strong force in the league for years to come. I have a lot of confidence in my young players. Reggie could be a superstar, and Mark will lead this team into the future.”
After a display of sports clichés, Vilhauer stepped down and new Pacer Price stepped up.
“Um… is this thing on?” Price started. “Um… I guess I’d like to say I’m happy to be here…but I’ve been moved around so much that… um… well I hate to say this… but… where am I?”
Officials informed Price of his whereabouts on the bus ride home.
