Ill be writing a bunch of different series of articles while im waiting for a team. I'll do a weekly look at one of the top Draft Prospects every sunday night.
Name: Derrick Coleman
Height: 6' 10"
Weight: 230
Age: 22
College: Syracuse
Stats: MIN FG% 3P% FT% RPG APG TPG BPG SPG PPG
86-87 Syracuse 30.6 56.0 0.0 68.6 8.8 1.2 1.8 1.8 1.2 11.9
87-88 Syracuse 32.4 58.7 16.7 63.0 11.0 2.2 2.2 1.6 1.3 13.5
88-89 Syracuse 33.1 57.5 0.0 69.2 11.4 2.9 2.4 3.4 1.2 16.9
89-90 Syracuse 35.3 55.1 36.6 71.5 12.1 2.9 2.7 2.0 1.5 17.9
Info: Derrick Coleman is the premier post player of this years draft. He has been the best player on a good syracuse team for 3 years now. In his sophmore, junior and senior years he has averaged a double double. He will be able to come into this league and mostly play the 4 spot with some time at Center. The main thing that makes scouts so jaw to the grounded is his knack for scoring. Each of his four years as an Orangeman he has had a FG% over 55 percent. THis last year he has really solidified himself as a number 1 pick. The only thing that might change this is if a PG needing team draws the first pick, then payton (more on him next sunday) might go first.
Pros: Great size and build for a PF. He is able to get great positioning on both the offensive and defensive sides. Simply put he dominates on the inside and has a great knack for scoring and rebounding. His defense also shoucldnt be looked down upon. He consistently went up against the other big men in the big east and won most of the battles.
Cons: Has he reached his peak? Most coaches and scouts have asked this question. Most personal at syracuse say that he hasn't. If he can put on 15 more pounds he would be even more dominating of a scorer. Still the question remains can he continue to be a dominating scorer in the NBA, most say yes.
