The ABCA salary cap is starting to cause some serious concerns from the team owners as they look to the future of the league. The main concern is what is called among league owners as the "Houston" factor or the JOE W clause. This is when the owner simply refuses to comply because the penalties are not harsh enough against him. The Rockets are the defending league champs and look to cakewalk through this season as clearly the most talented team. Owners claim that it is simply because Houston's payroll is roughly 120 million dollars. The league has a soft cap in place that is set at 50 Million but by paying out 120 million the Rockets miss out on their own draft picks and being unable to sign a mid level exception and a low level exception player. Joe W Sports has simply chosen to give those up and by being so willing to put himself in that spot the league owners are fuming. As Joe W looks to repeat this year with 7 star players the rest of the league can only watch and wonder why they havent' done the same thing. To miss out on a late first round pick has proven to be harmless and to not sign mid or low level exception players Joe W. didn't skip a beat.
Miami Heat Team President, Corey Newell "I am jealous and I am going to copy him exactly. All he did was go out and do what the rules say he can do. He beat me to the punch. He got young players and then signed them to long term contracts and that is well within the rules. He isn't afraid to spend the money when he is getting the jewelry."
Dallas Mavericks Team President, Dal "Something needs to be done or what is the reason for the cap. Participation points should be taken away or something else to cause an owner to hesitate to use this strategy. We are getting to the point that players contracts are getting larger and larger and we need to control that so the league can remain competitive. I just don't want to see the same thing here that happens in Major Leage Baseball with the uneven playing field. Most teams in the league have 1-3 stars on the team, but he has 7 studs and nothing stops him from trading one player under a giant contract for two guys about to get money and him doing it again. I'm not saying it isn't legal for now, but something needs to be decided and put in place or our league is in trouble."
Old Orlando Gm John Scott, "You guys all suck. I'm the greatest ever. I am the King of everyone. Bow down to me."
Some teams like the idea of taking away that teams birds rights on players. Decisions need to be made and the league office had better decide soon or the league will have a serious division among the haves and have nots.
