The Miami Heat, led by Head Coach Pat Summitt, have taken over first place in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. This may not seem like much so early in the season, but this is the first time in the not so storied history of the Miami Heat that this has occurred. In celebration the Heat have announced that each day they are in first place the ticket prices will drop .25 each game. This may not seem like much but the Heat are very good this year and have a chance to remain in first a long time. If the Heat remain in first the remainder of the season, the cheap seats would be so cheap that they would be free.
Team President Corey NewellC:\Documents and Settings\bschofield\My Documents\My Pictures[/img] commented during his son's tball game last week: "I think it is great. We know that if we can get fans in the seats we have a good chance to win. For us it is about the playoffs. We play to get a good seed and home court advantage and we'll go from there. Our lease on the stadium allows us to maintain the revenue from any playoff games so this isn't something we are doing to lose money, but rather to generate interest and build a fan base."
The Orlando Magic had maintained first place in the Atlantic division for the previous 10 years. That streak was the longest in the league's history and could be an end of a dynasty. Newell disagrees, "we just started the season and are trying to get fans out here. We know the Magic could turn it on and win 10 games in a row and we are back to where we normally are. The Magic are a great team that has an owner who is willing to spend money to keep them that way. We emulate them in all we do."
Currently, the Heat are in the second position in the conference behind the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks look good again and are a strong bet to win the conference title this year. Only time will tell, but the Heat are hot and hope to maintain. "It's a long season" says Newell. It is a long season Corey and here's to free tickets 2 months from now.
