Most Overrated Players in Retro ABCA
Kevin Garnett
KG is perhaps the most overrated player in the league. The guy has won one championship but that was when he was a youngster riding off the coatails of the great Rik Smits. Garnett has been a disappointment ever since the Magic traded Rik Smits to the Suns. He teamed with Shaquille O'Neal (another player who made this list) for a couple of seasons and failed to win a championship. Garnett had a chance to prove the doubt wrong last season when he was traded to Cleveland but instead was injured and put on injury reserve (by mistake) by the Cavaliers. This 2004-2005 season vindicates the fact that he is one of the league's most overrated players by leading the Jazz to a terrible overall record despite some major decline in the west.
Allen Iverson
Allen Iverson has been the most overhyped player this league has ever seen. He has failed to meet the expectations that were put upon him when he came into the league. Iverson has been nothing more than an average complimentary player yet teams have always tried to build around him. Iverson has always been a tweener since coming into the league and he's the reason why some teams are scared of putting their money on young Dajuan Wagner.
Shaquille O'Neal
Shaquille O'Neal has all the physical tools to be the most dominant player in the game but he fails to succeed in primetime. Shaq has never been league MVP and probably never will be league MVP. It's ironic that a guy who's got a career scoring average over 26 PPG cannot lead a team to a championship. He's proved that again by not elevating the Memphis Grizzlies, a championship contender the past couple years, to the playoffs. Shaq has been the greatest disappointment that this league has ever seen because he lacks the tenacity and drive to win. He's always been more concerned about his statistics rather than winning.
Tracy McGrady
T-Mac is nothing more than a complimentary player - similar to Allen Iverson. He is not a guy that a team can build around. The 76ers were smart though to trade for him but should not expect anything more than a player who will get you 20 PPG and fade away when the spotlight is on him. He's just like Shaquille O'Neal. McGrady has all the talent and ability to be a force in this league but just has never been able to figure it out. Seems like he's very content with being an okay player for the rest of his career.
The combination of Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan
TD and Kobe go hand in hand. They've played together basically their entire careers and they have to be the most unsuccessful talented duo in basketball history. One would think that Kobe and Tim Duncan would be the equivalent of Oscar Robertson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain but it's not the case with these two. We can make excuses and say that they've never had the sufficient amount of talent around them but why? They only finally managed to advance past the first round last year. This team will never win a championship with these two as the cornerstones so I think that it's about time that one of the two goes to add some more depth to this team.
