Deseret Morning News:
SHOCKER: Paul signs with Utah
In a shocking twist on the free agent market in the ABCA, Nuggets point guard Chris Paul has signed with the Utah Jazz. This is the largest free agent signing in the history of the team and has brought renewed life to a franchise that was set on a long rebuild to bring back the Jazz to what they once were.
Paul, who played for the Nuggets last year and led the team to the Title, couldn’t have signed with Denver after they showed serious hard cap problems once the season ended. This meant that Paul was probably going to be getting some money from other teams. Of the teams that offered, the Jazz stood out for the young point guard. “I have always loved Utah. It is close to Denver and has the same type of climate. Sure, they are rebuilding but that is fine. I see they have a bunch of choices in next years draft and that will really help out. The key is to get as many pieces as possible and see what happens. I feel bad for guys like Aaron Brooks, he is a good player but I’m the point guard now and he’ll probably have to go somewhere else. I wish him well. I know the team just drafted Derrick Rose and he’s an incredible talent also, but he’ll be the backup for right now and I don’t see that changing. I can shoot, pass and play defense and make my team better. I like to run and I don’t want to be slowed down by any lumbering big men. I want to run and get my guys easy buckets. You are going to see Chris Paul put up some numbers in Utah that will surprise you.”
In Paul’s 4 year career with Denver he has averaged over 22 points and 9 assists a game, culminating in last years 25 points and 10 assists while getting 3 steals a game. Easily one of the top 3 points in the league, gm Bjscho23 believes he is closer to a top 3 player in the game. “Paul brings it every night. He scores, assists, plays defense and is a team leader. We will build a champion around Chris Paul and that makes me very happy that he chose to play in Utah. Hopefully he can bring a ring to Salt Lake City, like he brought to Denver. Honestly, I expect him to do just that.”
